History of the College
Adamawa State College of Nursing Sciences, Yola is reputed as second to none (nullisecondus) in the North East sub region and also among the best in Nigeria. The College offers high quality professional Nursing Programmes. In 1975, the North-Eastern State Government established a School of Midwifery in Yola, Adamawa Province. The School started with fourteen (14) students under the leadership of Mrs. E. N. Magaji who was the first Principal. A year after (1976),the North-Eastern State was sub divided into three states with Yola becoming the capital of Gongola state. On 30th May, 1976, Gongola State Government established another School known as School of Nursing, Yola. The School started with a population of fifty two (52) students, with Alhaji Abba Kura Mubi, as pioneer principal, a Vice Principal and six academic staff. In the same year, the Schools were merged to become School of Nursing and Midwifery,Yola. Physical structures the school started with were three (3)classroom blocks, an administrative block, lecture hall, demonstration room, library, laboratory and a tailor’s shed, all located at the then General Hospital,Jimeta. Female students were accommodated in former Hammawa Senior Primary School,Toungo ward,Yola Town. In August 1991, the Federal Government of Nigeria created additional states, which saw the splitting of Gongola into Adamawa and Taraba states. This resulted into the deployment exercise, which also resulted in some structural changes in the School. The School was again demerged into School of Midwifery and School of Nursing, under different Principals and management teams in 1992. Up till 1993, the Schools were still located in their temporary sites in Specialist Hospital,Yola. In December 1993, the College, relocated to its permanent site in Yola town.In 2001, the State Government took over academic and administrative blocks of the College and handed them over to Federal Medical Centre, Yola. The College was then partitioned into two,an arrangement that left it with its original students’ hostels, senior staff quarters and the Principals’ houses. Government later constructed some classroom blocks on the School’s sports ground. The college is stil1 being expanded in terms of physical infrastructure. On the 21st June, 2001, The Governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna, signed into law a bill that established the college which made it a corporate entity with perpetual succession. Name of the School changed from School of Nursing and Midwifery to Adamawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
